$50 Giveaway for Thrive Foods

I am so giddy for this giveway. Because this blog is all about learning to use a well stocked pantry or food storage I love giving away food storage items, especially if that means someone can get freeze dried food. I consider freeze dried food the BMW of food storage.

And so Your Own Home Store is offering one of my readers $50 in Thrive product from their store. Anything you want. I am suggesting the yogurt bites. See my previous post to see how much we loved them and how we used it to make some yummy pancake tacos or pacos as we call them. I will be doing some reviews all week so that you can learn a little more about their product before the winner is chosen next Sunday.

Can I just make a remark here on how cute their cans look. I know it shouldn't matter but I have to admit I get more excited about pulling the food storage out and using it when it comes in a cute container like this.

A little bit about Thrive Food storage

"THRIVE foods come in all five food groups, plus desserts, cooking basics, and entrees. They have a long shelf life of 5-30 years (even oil, eggs, dairy, and real meat), and are easy to use in your everyday recipes. They are are one of the most nutritious food storage options available are GMO free and contain no added, sugar, salt, or preservatives. Many items (eggs, shortening, some produce items) are less expensive than a comparable product at the grocery store. You can actually save money by using them in your baking and cooking."

Loving the no added preservatives element.

Mix-A-Meal Cookbook Giveaway

The authors of this fantastic cookbook have sent me a review book and one to giveaway! I know it looks like your Grandma's cook book. But sometimes those are the best. Grandma's always know the good cooking secrets. I am actually really excited to start using this book. The Biscuit mix looks especially intriguing. The cookbook includes all kinds of ways to use the biscuit mix -- pizza, crackers, cream puffs and more. Seriously, who knew one mix could do so much. there are also mixes from everything from onion soup mix to french dressing. Each mix recipe includes a bulk and a mini version. They also include several ways to use each mix. These mixes do require some interesting dehydrated items like butter powder. I am currently looking for a good source for some of the ingredients in this book and will share with you soon. Some ingredients are available at http://mixameal.com/

So, if you are a make it from scratcher, a food storage buff or a thrifty cook, enter below by making a comment. Earn an extra entry by becoming a follower of this blog. The contest will end midnight September 15th.

Peas Please! Pea Salad and a Food Storage Giveaway

This post has so many different purposes. First I want to reveiw the Freeze dried peas I received from The Ready Store. Second, I want to give you a recipe for  a yummy pea salad and Finally, I want to give away some of the amazing bounty from The Ready Store. They gave me so much and I feel the need to share.

I love fresh peas. So much so, that I have issues with canned peas. In fact, I have issues with a lot of canned veggies. I stock up on frozen peas (they are a staple in so many recipes) but I like to have a backup plan for when the power goes out or other emergencies (like I forgot to buy peas on the last shopping trip). This is a pantry/food storage cooking blog after all. And in Southern Utah we have a lot of power outages. I don't know why. We just do. So, I try to keep a couple cans of canned peas in my food storage. But frankly, I just can't bring myself to eat them. Enter the big #10 can of Saratoga Farms freeze dried peas from The Ready Store. Hmmm. Could these be the answer to my pea woes?

These are the peas straight out of the can. Just add some water to these and let soak for 5 to 10 minutes. Then drain. I prefer a longer soak time. These peas have a little crunchiness to them and a little extra soaking time helps get rid of the freeze dried tastse.

Wow, these look like real peas. And here is my review: They are sweet and flavorful but just a little chewy or crunchy sometimes. I may not eat them plain as a side dish but they are infinitely better than those mushy canned stuff and they are really tasty in the following creamy pea salad. I also think that they would work well in a soup or casserole.  The best part:: There are no additives or preservatives. One ingredient only. Peas
The info: Cost $19.95
Servings per container: 24
Shelf Life 30 years unopened (that is forever) or several weeks once opened.

Now give this tasty creamy pea salad a try with any peas (except canned)
I used the rehydrated freeze dried peas and it turned out pretty tasty.

Adapted from a recipe by Camille Schank
This recipe can easily be halved

20 oz of frozen peas, defrosted  or 3 cups fresh or rehydrated freeze dried peas
1/4 Cup green onions, chopped
8 slices of bacon, chopped
1/4 Cup mayo
1/4 cup Sour Cream or plain yogurt ( I used greek yogurt because that is what I had)
2 TB parsley or 2 Tsp parsley flakes
salt and pepper to taste
dillweed to taste

Mix mayo, yogurt or sour cream, parsley, salt and pepper and dillweed. Combine with remaining ingredients: peas, onions and bacon. Chill for at least 1/2 hour.

The Give-Away
The Ready Store sent me a full box of goodies and I want to share some of the goodies with my readers. I am keeping a few of the items including the wind up rechargeable flashlight/FM/Am radio/Siren/cell phone charger. What an awesome idea. This will be perfect for our 72 hour kits.

It is a double whammy prize:
I already have lots of dried apple chips in my food storage. They are one of my family's favorite snacks. So, I am giving away a #10 can of freeze dried cinnamon apple chips from The Ready Store. I am also giving away one of their emergency kit portable canisters. I already have something similar in each of my cars and I think they are a handy space saving emergency kit that can be tossed in cars or a backpack for a day hike.

Each portable kit includes

1) 32 oz Water Bottle
Warmth & Shelter (4 Pieces):
(1) Emergency Blanket
(1) Emergency Poncho
(2) 8-Hour Handwarmers
Light & Communication (2 Pieces):
(1) 12-Hour Lightstick

Emergency Tools (2 Pieces):
(1) 5-in-1 Survival Aid with Compass
(1) 12-Function Swiss Style Knife

Here is how you win. Please leave some way to email you either through a link to your contact info or with your email address, The contest starts April 12 and ends on April 19th. Due to shipping costs, I need to limit this contest to residents in the United States. The winner will be randomly chosen on April 19th.

Jiffy Raspberry Valentine Cakes and a Jiffy Giveaway

My daughter's E-Z Bake valentines (scroll down for directions)

Happy Valentine's Day. Just for the love of it week is over. Tomorrow I am going to cook and bake up some love for my family. I hope you do the same for yours. But as a little valentine gift to my fellow foodies I am having my first little giveaway. Several weeks ago I posted a recipe on Jiffy Lemon Bars made with the Jiffy Lemon muffin mix. I honestly did not expect so many people to come and take a peek at that post. I was even more shocked to hear that some of you would happily have tried the lemon bars if only your stores stocked something other than Blueberry or Corn Muffin mix. How sad! Well, I find it funny that in a place where it is difficult to find a good prosciutto or other Italian staples, Jiffy muffin mixes come in so many flavors. And so I am giving away a box of six Jiffy Muffin mixes. I know it is not an expensive giveaway but hopefully, those of you who want to experiment with the other flavors of Jiffy, will jump on board and enter the drawing.

There are so many recipes to be made other than muffins, and I look forward to hearing other blogger's recipes. You can find some of those recipes at http://www.jiffymix.com/. My daughter loves to use the mixes for her E-Z Bake Oven. You will find her idea for a Jiffy valentine below. By the way this is in no way a paid promotion for them. I did not get free product or a request from them. I just wanted to give a little Pantry Eats love this time of year.

The Goodie Box:
Oatmeal Muffin Mix
Chocolate Muffin Mix
Lemon Muffin Mix
Apple Cinnamon Muffin Mix
Raspberry Muffin Mix
Banana Muffin Mix (These may change subject to availability)

How to win: (No complicated directions)
This giveaway is open to US and Canadian residents only (I am so sorry all my foreign foodie friends).
1. Make a comment below about which Jiffy mix you are excited to try.
2. We will have a random drawing on February 21st.
3. Make sure you leave me some way to contact you even if it is just a link back to your blog.
4. Check here on February 21st to see if you won (in case you forget to leave a contact). If I can't contact you I can't give you the prize.
E-Z Bake Valentine

The main reason I buy Jiffy Muffin mixes is because they are cheaper and yummier than the E-Z bake mixes you buy in the toy section. This year my daughter took the raspberry muffin mix, followed the directions on the back of the box and one by one she made some cakes in her mini cake pans. She then removed the cakes, cut out the center for a heart shaped cake and topped with a little pink frosting and a pink marshmallow heart. An easy solution for all your E-Z bakers.
